The Tragedy in Tullahoma: Grandfather and Infant Found Dead After Dog Muzzle
TULLAHOMA, Tennessee – A heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when police found a 50-year-old grandfather and his 3-month-old granddaughter dead after they were attacked by their family’s seven pit bulls. The tragic event took place at the home of James Alexander Smith, located on East Warren Street in Tullahoma, according to WSMV.
Emergency Response and Scene
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that Mr. Smith was already deceased. However, the dogs were still attacking the infant’s body, prompting authorities to kill some of the animals to stop the attack and rescue the victims. The district attorney described the scene as “brutal.” Detectives are now investigating what caused the dogs to maul their owners in such a violent manner.
Community Shock and Grief
“(The mom was) screaming, ‘my baby,’ as (Tullahoma Animal Control) pulled up,” said Rebecca Adams, who has lived across the street from the family for her entire life. “My heart just shattered.” Adams expressed that she is still coming to terms with what happened and shared that the family had managed seven dogs despite previous reports of their aggressive behavior towards other animals in the neighborhood.
Adams described how the pit bulls would often escape from the yard, chasing after other pets. “I’ve never seen them be aggressive towards people,” she said. “They’d run after cats, they’d run after dogs, you know, animal things. I could see them be aggressive towards animals. Never did I think they would do that to the kids.” The incident has left Adams and her neighbors in shock, with a constant stream of cars passing by the house as people try to confirm the tragedy for themselves.
Family’s Additional Hardship
The family faced additional challenges after losing their home due to its condition. Now, they must find new places to live while grieving the loss of loved ones. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral expenses and other necessary items for the community to donate.
“Today has just been everybody driving by just to see the house,” Adams said. “I guess they’re needing proof, too, that this really did happen.” The Tullahoma Police Department is currently determining what will become of the remaining dogs not killed during the incident and are trying to determine if Smith and his granddaughter were already dead before the attack or if the dog mauling was fatal.
The tragic event has left a lasting impact on the community, with neighbors struggling to come to terms with the loss. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding what led to such a devastating outcome and ensuring that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
