The Russo Brothers on the Future of Marvel

Joe and Anthony Russo, along with AGBO partner Donald Mustard, made some revealing statements at the Deadline’s Reality TV Summit UK. They confirmed they are currently in the throes of post-production for “Avengers: Doomsday” slated for a December 2026 release and pre-production for “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set for December 2027.

Endgame’s Completion

“When we did Endgame, we were like, we’ve completed it. It was our fourth Marvel film though. We had completed a story arc that we began in the Winter Soldier and for us it was very much intended to be an ending,” Anthony Russo explained.

Interactive Elements and Beyond

The Russo Brothers are not ruling out future collaboration with Marvel, but they are currently focused on the narrative vision for “Secret Wars.” Joe Russo teased that interactive elements might play a role in “Doomsday.” “We’re doing some work still on Doomsday and will be until probably they rip it out of our hands in November and that just means they have to give it to other people, to finish it for a few weeks, and then we’re in the middle of what we would call pre-production… we like doing many things at the same time,” he said.

Backrooms and the Future

“Our relationship with Marvel has built over many years now and there’s been a very fruitful relationship. We’ve done some of our best work with Marvel. We really value the relationship and I think they really value what we have brought to the MCU,” Anthony Russo added.

Backrooms, the R-Rated horror film that premiered in June 2026, charted a “Best Monday Ever” with $7.6 million in box office earnings.

This success has given the Russo Brothers hope for future projects like “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” as it shows audiences’ appetite for new and original content.

So, backrooms is really interesting because it was a mythology created collectively on the internet that then turned into a collective mythology that then turned into a film that did astronomically well. I think its just a taste of where this can all go,” Joe Russo concluded with a hint of optimism.

The future for Marvel seems to be intertwining traditional filmmaking with interactive experiences, as both mediums continue to evolve and merge in new ways. Whether or not “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will resonate with audiences remains to be seen, but the potential is certainly there given the success of Backrooms.
