The End of ‘Tell Me Lies’
You might think this is new, but… It’s not. Meaghan Oppenheimer, the showrunner of Hulu’s ‘Tell Me Lies’, has announced that the upcoming season 3 will be the final chapter for the series. This was always in the cards, Oppenheimer told Deadline.
Three Seasons and Counting
The decision to end after three seasons wasn’t a surprise. Oppenheimer explained during an interview that she had written it with a certain amount of finality in mind. “I think three seasons is the perfect amount,” she stated, adding that it’s challenging to consider continuing the show beyond its natural conclusion.
Lucy’s Demons
The series centers on Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White), an on-off couple whose relationship spirals into a web of dark secrets and manipulations. Oppenheimer revealed that Lucy is never deliberately cruel; she always does things out of place intentions, while Stephen’s cruelty is more straightforward. “Stephen’s never done a kindness or a well-intentioned thing in his life,” Oppenheimer said bluntly.
The Future
Despite the finale being on the horizon, Oppenheimer isn’t stopping there. She’s developing a new project with 20th Television that focuses on dark, twisted relationships between adult siblings. “I really want to do a family drama that feels as edgy and twisted and addictive as ‘Tell Me Lies’,” she shared excitedly.
Lessons Learned
The show has faced mixed reactions from audiences, with some perceiving Lucy and Stephen as the same character type. Oppenheimer addressed this by explaining how real narcissists can warp reality in ways that make decisions seem illogical. “The word ‘narcissist’ is so overused,” she stated, adding that not all relationship issues stem from true personality disorders.
The season 3 finale of ‘Tell Me Lies’ will drop on Tuesday at 12AM ET (9 PM PT Monday night) on Hulu and Disney+. The show has left a lasting impact, with Oppenheimer hoping it has helped liberate some viewers by making them recognize their own situations. “I hope so,” she said, adding that facing serious consequences can change lives for the better.
