School Closings Amid Snow Emergency in River Cities Region
Due to the significant overnight snowfall, area schools in the River Cities region have announced closings for Tuesday. The decision aims to ensure student and staff safety as weather conditions make travel hazardous.
Gallia County Schools: Closed for the Day
In Gallia County, Ohio, two local school districts—Galla County Local and Gallipolis City Schools—are closing their doors on Tuesday. This move is a precautionary measure given the accumulation of snow expected to impact transportation and overall safety.
Meigs County: Two-Hour Delay Followed by Closures
Across Meigs County, Ohio, several schools including Southern Local and Meigs Local have been closed for the day. Additionally, a two-hour delay has been declared by the Meigs County Health Department to allow for safer travel conditions in the morning.
Mason County: Non-Traditional Instruction Day
Further east in Mason County, West Virginia, all schools will be operating on a non-traditional instruction (NTI) day. Students are expected to complete packets or engage in online work from home while staff members remain available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Emergency Declarations and Cautionary Warnings
To address the weather situation, both the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office and the Gallia County Sheriff’s office have declared snow emergencies at different levels—level two in Meigs County and level one in Gallia County. These declarations are due to concerns over snow-covered roadways, blowing and drifting snow, and icy surfaces.
Local officials urge motorists to exercise caution when traveling and only venture out if absolutely necessary. Mason County Emergency Management has also requested the public to avoid unnecessary travel as much as possible during this period of severe weather.
The school closings in the River Cities region underscore the importance of preparedness and safety measures during adverse weather conditions, ensuring that both students and staff can return to normal operations once the weather improves.
