The Move That Mattered: Raiders and Colts in Free Agency
Raiders sign Segun Olubi. Why didn’t Colts re-sign free agent LB?
Segun Olubi, a linebacker with three accrued NFL seasons under his belt, has signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. This move is significant for both teams but especially for the Colts, who let him go without batting an eye.
A Core Special Teams Player
During his time with the Colts, Olubi was a core special teams player. According to PFF, he played over 300 snaps in each of the last three seasons and contributed to five out of six different phases regularly. His role on defense has been minimal; he played just 142 career snaps, with 115 coming in 2023.
Colts’ Experience Gap
The Colts’ linebacker room is short on experience after trading Zaire Franklin. Jaylon Carlies, who has played over 200 career defensive snaps, is the most experienced player at this position. Addressing linebacker remains a major need for GM Chris Ballard.
Why Didn’t Colts Re-Sign Olubi?
With Olubi becoming an unrestricted free agent by non-tendering him, he was able to sign where he pleased. The Colts’ decision to let him go could be seen as part of a broader strategy or budget constraints. Regardless, it leaves a hole in their linebacker corps.
You might think this is new, but Chris Ballard has always been decisive when it comes to his roster decisions.
This time, he chose not to re-sign Olubi despite his consistent performance on special teams. It could be an indication of the team’s plans for 2026 and beyond.
