Sharks Overcome Blue Jackets in Five-Goal Win
Macklin Celebrini extended his point streak to 11 games with a key goal that propelled the San Jose Sharks over the Columbus Blue Jackets, securing a 5-2 victory at SAP Center on Tuesday. The win marked the Sharks’ fourth out of their last five matches.
Key Performances
Alexander Wennberg was instrumental in the Sharks’ triumph, scoring a goal and adding two assists. His first-period assist saw Pavol Regenda score his fourth goal in two games, giving San Jose an early 1-0 lead at 19:11 of the first period.
Regenda’s second contribution came during the second period when he scored on a 2-on-1 pass from Wennberg. The latter’s backhand shot over Greaves’ glove at 4:14 put the Sharks ahead, 2-0. This was Wennberg’s first game since signing a three-year contract worth $6 million annually with San Jose.
Blue Jackets’ Response
The Blue Jackets, who had won four of their last six matches, showed resilience but could not match the Sharks’ offensive output. Alex Nedeljkovic made 34 saves in goal for San Jose, while Columbus’s Jet Greaves saved 31 shots.
Despite a strong start by Greaves, the Blue Jackets struggled to capitalize on breakaways, as seen when Zack Ostapchuk raced down the ice and beat Greaves with a backhand move. This led to Sean Monahan scoring his first game after missing four games due to injury at 16:05 of the third period.
Final Outcome
The Sharks maintained their momentum into the final minutes, adding another goal through Ostapchuk and a late empty-netter from Mario Ferraro. Celebrini sealed the game by scoring an empty-net goal to push the final score to 5-2 in favor of San Jose.
Sharks’ Coach Reflects on Performance
“We talked about bouncing back, but we got to move on and continue to get better,” said Ryan Warsofsky, Sharks’ coach. The team’s ability to recover from an early deficit and execute under pressure was key in securing the win.
Blue Jackets Coach’s Assessment
“We missed a couple opportunities,” noted Columbus’ Dean Evason. “Giving up breakaways is not a good remedy for a win.” The coach expressed concern over his team’s inability to convert chances, particularly on the power play and in transition.
The San Jose Sharks now hold a record of 21-18-3, while the Columbus Blue Jackets fall to 18-17-7. Celebrini’s historic point streak ties him with Todd Elik for fifth place in Sharks history, only behind Erik Karlsson, Mikael Granlund, Rob Gaudreau, and Jonathan Cheechoo.
