Ruffin’s alleged scheme spanned over seven months last year. Through a series of official-sounding emails, she convinced the family to hand over staggering sums via wire transfers and Venmo payments. She claimed portions would resolve her client Kai Hansen’s charges and cover medical treatment for an NYPD officer allegedly assaulted by Hansen. But as the grand jury indictment reveals, “neither the (District Attorney’s Office) nor the officer requested any money from the client at any point.”

Ruffin represented one of 10 jail escapees who broke out last May, and her involvement led to a mistrial in that case as well.
