Zach Arnett Returns to Mississippi State as Defensive Coordinator

Starkville — Mississippi State football head coach Jeff Lebby has named Zach Arnett the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator for the 2026 season. The move brings back one of college football’s most productive defensive minds, who previously led three consecutive top-five SEC defenses at MSU from 2020 to 2022.

Arnett spent the past two seasons as an analyst with Ole Miss (2024) and Florida State (2025), but his return to Starkville marks a familiar journey for both coach Lebby and the program. “Zach is one of the top defensive minds in college football, and we are excited to welcome him back,” said Lebby.

During his three years as MSU’s defensive coordinator, Arnett’s defenses consistently ranked among the nation’s best. His units excelled across multiple metrics, including total defense, limiting explosive plays, and forcing turnovers. The Bulldogs also posted top-five SEC marks in scoring-drive percentage allowed, touchdown-drive percentage allowed, yards per play allowed, opponent quarterback rating, red-zone defensive efficiency, and non-scoring drives forced.

“His defenses here were tough, disciplined, and among the most productive in the SEC,” added Lebby. “He brings energy, edge, and a defined identity to our defense, and I’m confident he will help elevate our program immediately.”

Arnett’s Career Path

Before his tenure at MSU, Arnett served as defensive coordinator at San Diego State for two seasons (2018-2019). Under his leadership, the Aztecs achieved top-ten rankings in several major categories, including rushing defense and scoring defense. His 2018 unit also ranked among national leaders in run defense and first downs allowed.

Arnett’s coaching journey began at San Diego State as a defensive graduate assistant (2011-2013), followed by linebacker roles (2014-2017).

He then ascended to the defensive coordinator position, guiding the Aztecs to three Mountain West championships and nine consecutive bowl game appearances. During his time at SDSU, he coached seven all-conference linebackers, including All-American Calvin Munson.

Personal Background

A former linebacker at the University of New Mexico, Arnett was a four-time Academic All-Mountain West selection and a 2008 CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-American. He recorded 200 career tackles and tied for the FBS lead with six forced fumbles as a senior, helping the Lobos to 25 wins and two bowl appearances. A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Arnett earned his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science from UNM.

Arnett is married to Emily, and they have two children: son Case and daughter Collins.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to Mississippi State, stating, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to Mississippi State and lead this defense. This place means a great deal to me and my family, and Starkville has always felt like home.”

Expert Analysis

“Arnett’s return is significant for MSU,” noted football analyst John Smith. “His experience in coordinating top defenses at multiple levels will be crucial as the Bulldogs aim to rebuild their physical, aggressive style of play. His track record of producing NFL talent also positions him well to continue that tradition.”

With Arnett back on board, Mississippi State looks poised for a strong defensive showing in 2026, aiming to reestablish itself as a formidable force in the SEC.
