“i Hope I Show IT’s Possible”: Natalie Portman Wants a Vegan Future for Fashion

, but a lot of the replacement things aren’t necessarily great for the environment,” Portman explains. “So many of these alternatives have some percentage of plastic in them.”

Advancing Sustainable Fashion with Uncaged Innovations

That’s why Portman was drawn to New York-based start-up Uncaged Innovations and their bio-based leather alternative, Elevate. Crafted from grain by-products, natural rubber, plant oils, mineral pigments, and flower extracts, this innovative material impressed the actress so much that she invested in the company and took on a strategic partnership role.

“I was so impressed by what they had created that I immediately wanted to be part of it,” Portman says. “To create this bio material that really replicates the feel, the luxury, the quality of leather, but is really eco-friendly and animal-free – something I’ve always wanted.”

The Road Ahead for Vegan Fashion

Since its launch in 2020, Elevate has already been adopted by major automotive brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Hyundai Motor Group. The next step is to bring this sustainable material into the fashion industry.

“I’m really involved in getting the word out that this is an incredible for everything from our interiors to shoes,” Portman continues. “It will take time, but I hope my own approach shows that it’s possible.”

Portman’s investment and advocacy highlight her belief that ethical fashion can be both beautiful and durable, offering a high-quality alternative at comparable price points.

Beyond Vegan Leather: Vintage Obsession

In addition to her commitment to sustainable materials, Portman is also a vintage shopping enthusiast. She frequently sources unique pieces from stores like Fallon, Re-See, and Thanx God I’m A VIP in Paris.

“I shop vintage, second-hand almost exclusively,” she says. “First of all, it’s very fun to discover a unique piece that feels very individual, and second of all, it also feels good to be the circular economy.”

Her best vintage purchase so far is a 1970s pink halter-neck dress from Yves Saint Laurent, which she wore to her son’s bar mitzvah.

The Future of Fashion

For Portman, the future of fashion lies in companies adopting more sustainable practices and eliminating animal products altogether. “I would love to see companies using more sustainable materials and getting rid of animal products altogether – that would be my goal,” she asserts.

“And of course, more circular purchasing and in all aspects.” Portman’s vision for a vegan future is not just a personal choice but an active step towards a greener planet.
