Skate Shavings — News and Notes from Caps Morning Skate

on a regular year coming in here and playing them on the road in their building is a significant challenge.”

Keys to Success: Forechecking, Power Play, and Defense

The Caps aim to replicate elements of Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Flames. Three key factors were instrumental: their forecheck, power play, and 5-on-5 defense.

“The hard thing with forechecking in this league and doing it consistently at a high level is every team talks about being a good forechecking team and putting pucks in and going in and getting them back,” Carbery explained. “It’s the consistency at which you do it, because to just do it time and time and time again.”

The Capitals’ power play did not score on Friday but dominated the offensive zone, moving the puck crisply and engineering several successful retrievals.

“I think we were just good early, at breaking pressure,” Carbery added. “So, Leonard walks downhill – probably, I’m going to guess, three or four times – where he’s got good looks. It’s hard to score in those scenarios, but usually it le to maybe a second or a third puck off the rebound, off the spray.”

Defensively, the Caps limited Calgary to just eight shots on net at 5-on-5 after the first period and none over a span of more than 16 minutes in the second.

Carbery highlighted the importance of moving pucks out of their zone quickly: “In moving a puck out of our zone, sometimes we want to use the middle, sometimes we want to make a play and move a puck potentially back. But sometimes the best recipe for our success is to move that puck as quickly as we possibly can and don’t overcomplicate it.”

Goalie Lineup and Recent Performance

Charlie Lindgren will start in net for the Capitals, looking to build on his recent performance. Lindgren is 2-2-1 in his last five starts and aims for his eighth win of the season.

“We understand the difficulties, but at the same time, there’s no reason why we can’t come in here and play well,” Carbery stated confidently. “And we have been in this situation before, we’ve gone into Montreal and played well, and in the exact same scenario We’ve played in this building and played well in previous years.”

The Edmonton Oilers will be led by Connor Ingram, who has been their most consistent goaltender with a 5-3-1 record. The Oilers are currently carrying three goalies, and Ingram’s performance could be crucial in this high-stakes game.

Both teams bring a wealth of talent to the ice, making for an exciting matchup. The Caps hope to continue their winning streak after Friday’s victory, while the Oilers aim to bounce back from recent losses.
