The restaurant, which opened as a modern Portuguese establishment in September 2024, was a labor of love for both Emeril and his son E.J. Lagasse.

According to the company statement, the closure decision came due to “the high costs of operating in the current environment.” However, it’s clear that 34 had its moments of brilliance, introducing many guests to Portuguese cuisine for the first time. The name 34 itself is a nod to the Lagasse family heritage, as it combines parts of their names.

The restaurant made waves from the moment it opened, with its innovative menu and stylish interior design. It was one of the top new restaurants for 2024, making it to Where NOLA Eats’ list of favorites. Additionally, 34 earned a Michelin Guide recommendation and a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, highlighting its commitment to quality and authenticity.
Future Plans
E.J. Lagasse expressed his gratitude for the experience at 34 Restaurant & Bar and hinted that more Portuguese cuisine could be coming to New Orleans. “This isn’t the last caldo verde we’ll be sharing with the New Orleans community,” he said, referring to a traditional Portuguese soup.
The closure of 34 marks another significant event in downtown New Orleans’s dining landscape, following the recent closing of Devil Moon BBQ and Brewery St. X in January 2025. The Lagasse family continues to navigate the ever-changing culinary scene with their flagship Emeril’s Restaurant also gaining international attention.
For now, those interested can still enjoy the last few days at 34 Restaurant & Bar, located at 714 Baronne St., open from Wednesday to Sunday starting at 4 p.m. (with earlier hours on Fridays).
