Rising Toll: Multiple Fatal Crashes Across Arkansas

Seven people lost their lives and five others sustained injuries in a series of tragic crashes across Arkansas last week. The incidents, detailed by preliminary police reports, spanned various locations including Interstate 40 and U.S. 62, painting a picture of the widespread nature of these accidents.

Jason Dotson’s Tragic End

In a report from state police, it was revealed that Jason Dotson, aged 47, met his untimely end while driving against traffic on Interstate 40 in London. The incident occurred at around 10:38 p.m. on January 5th. A 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer veered to avoid the oncoming vehicle, leading to a collision with Dotson’s 2024 Chevrolet Malibu. This first impact sent the Malibu into the inside lane, where it struck an 2025 International truck, causing injury to its driver Anthoney Hale.

Robert Furches’ Last Drive

Roughly 12 hours later, Robert Furches, 71 years old and from Millington, Tennessee, was involved in a fatal crash at an intersection in Jonesboro. The report stated that around 10:55 a.m., Furches was driving a 2023 Freightliner east on CW Post Road when it collided with a southbound 2020 Volvo driven by Dinh Linh Hong, 55, of Morrow, Georgia. The collision resulted in Hong’s injury.

Single-Vehicle Crashes and Tragic Losses

Moving through the week, Jared Smith, 28, was struck by a truck on Interstate 555 near Poinsett County. While standing in traffic due to a previous crash, he was hit around 5:43 a.m., leading to his death. Another single-vehicle accident occurred at 11:35 a.m. when Heather Lehr, 56, of Berryville, lost control of her 2023 Chevrolet Bolt on U.S. 62 and struck a concrete wall.

By Thursday evening, Demarcus Aaron, 27, faced his own fatal crash.

The incident happened at around 10:59 p.m. in Nevada County when his 2013 Nissan veered off the road, struck a tree, and left two passengers injured—Lakiyah Hopson, 22, from Camden, and Jonavan Robinson, 18, from El Dorado.

On Friday afternoon, Alene Drummond, 64, of Bigelow, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Arkansas 10. The report described the incident as occurring around 4:09 p.m., when her 2005 Toyota Tundra left the roadway and struck a tree.

The final accident took place at 5:50 p.m. on Friday, involving Larry Neal, 56, of Bay. While driving his 2000 Mazda north on Interstate 555 in Poinsett County, Neal’s vehicle left the road, struck a cable barrier, and then crossed into the opposite lane before colliding with an oncoming 2023 Freightliner driven by Mark Torbert.

Each of these tragic events serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving practices. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ADOT) urges all drivers to remain vigilant, follow traffic laws, and prioritize their safety and that of others on the road.
